Bishop Mary Helen Taylor is the youngest of 14 children, born in Lumberton, North Carolina; she grew up in Port Chester, NY. Bishop Taylor’s love for God and the work of the Kingdom was nourished through the ministry of Pastor A.E. Lightfoot at Bethel FBH Church, Port Chester, New York. After suffering through illness at the age of 21, she submitted to the call of God to preach the Gospel. She has served in ministry for over 40 years which includes 26 years of pastoral experience.
Bishop Mary Helen Taylor has been a member of Bethel, since the age of 8. As a member, she played an active role in all aspects of the Ministry. Bishop Taylor is an active member of various community groups, e.g.. Regional Leader, Westchester Chapter, Young Lives International Ministries, which is an outreach for teen moms, the Ministerial Coalition, the NAACP and the Committee for Better Government in the Village of Port Chester, NY.
Bishop Taylor is a graduate of Port Chester High School. After graduating High School, she attended Pace University where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education; she also attended the College of New Rochelle where she received a Master of Science Degree in Special Education.
Bishop Taylor was joined in marriage to Executive Pastor, Elder Daniel Taylor in 1983. They have three sons, Daniel Joshua, Adam Rickardo and Micah John; a daughter through love, Katrell; two grandchildren, Aiden and Kaylee.
Bishop Taylor’s spirituality is remarkable. She is a woman dedicated to prayer, the study of the Word and fasting. Bishop Taylor is a Student of the Word. She is a graduate of Bethel Bible Institute where she received an Associate’s Degree in Biblical Studies. She also attended Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, NY in the Master of Divinity Program and received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from His Excellence Theological Seminary. We have the utmost confidence that Bishop Taylor can apply (1 Peter 3:15b)…“if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.” (NLT) She is an example of the scripture “the just shall live by faith.” Bishop Taylor daily portrays a life of Holiness in the presence of all whom she comes in contact with.
Bishop Taylor’s Leadership style is one of guidance, instructions, and directions for the achievement and successful growth in Ministry. This includes establishing new ministries, e.g. (Mom’s ministry, community outreach, marriage, and the family). Bishop is well respected by her colleagues in the ministry and well received by Community Officials.
Bishop Taylor has served as the Pastor of New Bethel Community Worship Center, Port Chester, NY, formally known as Bethel Church of God since 1999. As to Bishop Taylor’s sensitivity to Pastoral issues, such as pain, joy, and complexity in the lives of others, she responds with the willingness to go the distance. Bishop Taylor does not deny or run from her own fears and conflicts but faces them with prayer and searching of the scriptures, which enables her to be sensitive and respond with empathy to others facing similar situations.
Bishop Taylor is a gifted educator and recently retired from the Connecticut Public School System after (37) years of teaching, which included tutoring and mentoring. Bishop Taylor served as coordinator of the Young Parent’s Program at Briggs High School, Norwalk for 13 years, implementing the Parents As Teachers program and Raising Readers Parent Club. We the members of the New Bethel Community Worship Center admire her for her strength, tenacity, and steadfastness, as she encourages each member to accomplish their God-given purpose. Bishop Taylor is gifted in preaching and teaching the Word, she has a special affinity and rapport with the Youth, which is evident in her interaction with them and theirs with her. Bishop Taylor also has been endowed with the following gifts: Word of Wisdom, Gift of Tongues, Prophesy, Gift of Giving and other gifts imparted as the Holy Spirit wills.
Bishop Taylor is a woman of impeccable character, integrity, loyalty, and grace. She excels in maturity, intelligence, and mental proficiency. In regard to work, church and family, she strives to make sure that each area is properly covered. She also enjoys sharing a meal and laughter with her members.
Bishop Taylor is a great asset to the Bishopric of the Sounds of Praise and the Church of God. Her spiritual knowledge, dedication, faithfulness, commitment and willingness to serve is commendable. Bishop Mary Helen Taylor considers herself as a Servant of Christ and His Church. Bishop Taylor lives her life through the strength of God, often quoting the scripture Isaiah 40:31, "... for they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength ..." Through faith and the strength of God, Bishop Taylor endeavors to build a supernatural church as she walks in the footsteps of Jesus.
